‘Little Dancer’ is the moody and experimental debut single from Long Island-based multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Dave Belding. Belding founded the band Echo Chamber but, after eventually all going their separate ways, he needed a new musical outlet, and this solo project was born. “Songs like ‘Little Dancer’ can’t really be categorized into anything,” says the musician. “It exists in the in-between where forms, formulas, and rules are broken”. It’s the perfect description of the tune, to be honest with you. It’s impossible to place ‘Little Dancer’ into some sort of box or genre. I think that’s what I love about it! It’s so different and exploratory, it just has to be admired.
As you can imagine, Belding cites a wide range of influences and inspiration for his sound. Tool, Slipknot, Sneaker Pimps, Thrice, and Hans Zimmer just to name a few. What’s impressive is his ability to combine all of these influences and turn them into a sound that’s completely his own. ‘Little Dancer’ is truly like nothing I’ve quite heard before.
Written as a message for Belding’s daughter to “not let the haters and negativity” get in the way of her passions, ‘Little Dancer’ is an exceptional track. It might be a little too experimental and “out there” for some. But, if you’re one of the lucky ones who it resonates with, just enjoy your time with it.
