Darrian Gerard could be misunderstood by many as an Avril Lavigne sound-alike. Sure, they are both Canadian and extremely talented, but the similarities end there, as long as it concerns us. You see, Gerard’s artistic outlook is rather different, building her sonic identity over fiercer and hard-hitting material, together with empowering lyricism that’s fully placed in the contemporary.
‘Villain’ is Darrian’s latest effort, a stunning single that showcases once again the immense class, charisma and even elegance she has to offer. Introduced by anthemic guitar riffing and punchy drums, ‘Villain’ flourishes thanks to Gerard’s evocative and malleable vocals, commanding attention and a certain amount of cathartic energy.
Lyrically, the song acts as a self-confessing outlet, helping Gerard get to know herself a bit more. As she explains: “‘Villain’ is about letting go of trying to please people and finally playing your role as the “bad guy”, or as some might see it. The idea for the song came to me one day when I realised I was finally doing things the way I wanted to do them, saying no to others and saying yes to myself”.
