It was only earlier this month that we introduced you to the American-Puerto Rican hyper-pop duo Darling Gails. Comprised of Bella Luxury and Jason Diaz, the pair blew us away with their punchy and luscious single ‘Triangle’. They now return with ‘Gunk’, their fifteen-track sophomore offering that’s unlike anything I’ve heard in some time. Pushing the limits of electro-pop with style and grace, it’s a record that challenges conventional genres while remaining irresistibly catchy and surprising at every turn.
‘Greetings’ is a genuinely funny opener, with the duo humorously poking fun at themselves through outrageous comments from others on the band. The title track then appears and the listener is treated to an eclectic and leftfield almost deep house tune that focuses on a trip to the dentist. Hey, I told you they were unorthodox!
‘Heart’ brings a dark, heavy, and synthy vibe to the table before ‘Switch’ comes in with loud and gritty bass, bringing to mind a previous quote from Jason. “If the song doesn’t sound like we would get burned at the stake for witchcraft in 1692, we won’t release it”.
Having met over Twitter and never actually in person, there’s a unique synergy and chemistry between the two musicians. Proving that great music knows no physical bounds, I implore you to, not just listen to, but digest and absorb ‘Gunk’.
