We have been following Berlin’s dark-pop sensation IRYS since the beginning (almost). Naturally, we’d love to continue to do so. It’s hard to pinpoint what makes the German talent a pretty special artist: perhaps her icy, cold vocals, perfectly fitting her style. Or perhaps the robotic, minimal productions, bathed in avant-garde and techno influences. Following up from ‘Riots’ (described by us as “another mesmerising offering”), IRYS returns with a haunting, sleazy jewel, ‘Borderline’.
Staying true to her flagship genre, dark-electro-pop, the record features punchy, thick drum-machine-style beats, while an eerie guitar arpeggio characterizes the song positively. The vibe remains posed even during the chorus, boasting a retro ‘choir’ synthesised sound, gifting a special spooky and lo-fi character to the whole tune. IRYS’ vocals float freely on top of all this musical goodness. Their flimsy, otherworldly nature helps ‘Borderline’ achieve its desired effect. That’s stunning dark pop.
Describing the lyricism behind the song, IRYS explains: “It’s about feeling shaky while trying to get out of a difficult place, but it’s also about overcoming battles and becoming a stronger version of yourself. It’s about acknowledging the struggle but also about hope.”
What has always impressed us about the Berlin native is her proud DIY aesthetic. An attitude that’s paying off, with IRYS becoming a skilled producer and a mesmerising songwriter. It’s time for the big industry boys to start paying attention: she’s clearly meant for bigger and greater things.
