The keen reader might remember Dara Blaxx, British-Nigerian singer/songwriter with a knack for elegant, luscious and sultry R&B vibes. Often infusing them with Afro influences, the Southampton-based creative was interviewed by Mesmerized last year, when we described her music as an “immersive, flirty, and silky-smooth soundscape”. Well, Blaxx has now returned with her latest effort, ‘The Mission’, an old-school, ballad-esque piece that’s as tender as it is enticing.
Produced by Diego Castro, the record is steeped in hazy neo-soul energy, with a luxurious beat wrapping around supreme piano chords. Dara’s evocative vocals are the perfect match for such a dynamic formula, crowning the track with their unmatched charisma and perfect pitch. The lyricism is pretty interesting here, not just for its literary meaning, but also for the implication of its release campaign.
Delving into the many avenues of love and attraction from a destiny-based perspective, Blaxx urges the listeners to get involved and become ‘agents’ for the ultimate cause – embrace passion. Speaking about the inspiration behind the song, Dara explains: “It explores themes of attraction, intimacy & serendipitous moments that feel as though they were written in the stars.”
