Having featured him previously in our publication, we are particularly glad to see Dani Slovak coming back onto the music scene, once again sharing his wonderful, nuanced and heart-wrenching vocals for everyone’s enjoyment. Previously writing about ‘Like a Dream’, we proudly declared: “a powerful reminder that even in our darkest moments, we can find hope in the music that speaks to our souls”. ‘Drowning in Fire’ is Dani’s latest effort: a return to fuller electronic arrangements, the record sees the London-based talent flourishing in a sea of sonic distortion, really communicating the sensation of inner conflict and emotional pain.
Lyrically, the track draws from personal experience, following the ending of a relationship and the many conflicting feelings arising from it. Inadequacy and expectations: they all play a part into Slovak’s refined storytelling, resulting in an exuberant, furious and fierce painful anthem, echoing conservative views on queer love.
Active between London and Prague, the rising upcomer has been known to break boundaries, championing his own identity in the face of societal constructs and taboos. ‘Drowning in Fire’ is only the latest chapter of a career that we are confident will continue to grow, especially given Slovak’s powerful and complex vocals, able to hit acute notes while retaining a certain deep and gritty quality.
