We don’t shy away from instrumental pieces. In fact, they often are the ones providing the more suggestive and mesmerising sonic journey. Take for instance the latest release by American sound alchemist Damn Stargazers. Titled ‘Bask’, it is a gooey, wholesome trip into guitar-aided electronica, with layered percussions and shiny keys. The listening experience could be likened to time spent in a flotation tank: suddenly, we are thrown into a timeless and malleable new reality, one where our references are scrambled and reorganized. One where we get to connect to a deeper conscience.
While his love affair with music can be traced to more than a decade ago, Damn Stargazers reconnected to his artistic instincts during the pandemic, allowing him to focus on music. Drawing influence from a range of artists, from Tycho to Wes Montgomery, the Montclair talent began releasing his own songs in 2020 from his studio, Stargazers Studios in Nutley, NJ.
‘Bask’ was conceived during a solo writing trip last summer. Describing the inspiration behind the piece, he explains: “There was a moment when I was sitting in my hotel room and it was golden hour – about 6pm in late August. That was the only time of day my hotel room would really get direct sunlight and it only lasted for about 45 minutes until the sun would disappear behind another building. It was such an inspiring moment because it felt like the room, which was otherwise dark and dull, was filled with this amazing calm energy. I’d only work on the song during that time of day.”
