We value eclecticism very highly these days. In an industry landscape that appears standardized around a very few working formulas, it’s refreshing to discover acts pursuing their own artistic paths. Take DAAY, for instance. Hailing from London, the group has been active since 2019, going through an ever-changing line-up and continuous sonic research. Now, they proudly unveil ‘Cosmic Gossip’, their latest EP, an impressive collection of cosmic, psych-flavoured alt-rock, seemingly experimental while maintaining a certain pop appeal.
Opening with the title track, it is clear that DAAY champions eclecticism first and foremost. Among synthetisers, groovy guitars and an anthemic chorus, the band’s strengths stand out in full force. Hypnotising vocals guide the listener through an unknown journey of unexpected euphoria. ‘Top Heavy’ follows with a more prominent sax part, really delving into collective vocals and man-made efxs. ‘Mercy In The Jungle’ slows the pace down, while maintaining a highly bubbly and sparse aesthetic. Perhaps the most daring piece in the EP.
‘Who Am I’ takes the record to a close with witty elegance, channelling a certain vintage energy too. We love it. Headed by Alex Barty-King, DAAY is a surprising, disorienting discovery, a nugget of fresh air in a bleak landscape.
