Well, that was a trip. We have been listening to ‘Top Heavy’ for a while now, and it is definitely the most authentic and original offering we have heard this year. You see, the piece doesn’t follow any pre-determined rules or structure; rather, it pursues its own recipe, boasting a hugely theatrical character and long, organic soundscapes with eclectic instrumentation. Penned by London-based outfit DAAY, ‘Top Heavy’ is part of an upcoming concept EP, ‘Cosmic Gossip’ – say that again! A concept EP. DAAY are a brave band, sacrificing the universally accepted single format for a longer, more complex and nuanced record.
It’s refreshing to see upcoming groups not being afraid to break the rules, and we are here for it. Featuring Alex BartyKing songwriting and singing, Nick Wemyss on lead guitar, Melody Wayfare on synths, Jonathan Woods on rhythm guitar, Euan McGuinty on bass and Max Mason on drums, DAAY possesses a variety of timbre and formulas that are frankly very enticing, especially in their use of saxophones and glitchy electronica, blended well with more conventional rock-flavoured stylings.
Lyrically, ‘Top Heavy’ is themed around losing balance when life gets too heavy, doing so as part of a storyline that is the concept of the whole EP. As DAAY explain: ‘Cosmic Gossip’ is a 15-minute story uninterrupted music based loosely on the Hero’s Journey concept from writer Joseph Campbell. From dark and confused beginnings, we head out to the great unknown only to find ourselves safe at home with a new perspective on who we are and why we’re here.
