Talents arrive from every corner of the world, from any age bracket, and from any background. For instance, take Cynthia Angelica, Annapolis-based singer-songwriter with a knack for poignant and anthemic melodies. While pursuing a career as a higher education executive ghostwriter, she’s able to reserve time for artistic creation, delivering magnificent music. Self-describing her output as ‘Spiritual Pop’, she manages to deliver material that’s meaningful and healing, helping the listener cope with struggle and challenges.
Some of you might remember Angelica from a past feature we did for her earlier this year, when her debut single ‘Grace’ was released. We were highly impressed at the time, writing “listening to ‘Grace’ is like taking a deep breath, coming face to face with your demons and choosing to give it all up to a higher power, lifting the weight on your shoulder”. Well, her new offering ‘Flatline’ is nothing less: although sharing a more pensive and haunting aesthetic, fitting its harsh lyrical theme.
Framed into a poignant electronic production, we find Cynthia Angelica’s evocative and solemn vocals, painting a bleak picture recalling mass shootings and the universe of pain around them. A truly contemporary theme, we are impressed with the way she’s able to use gloomy lyrical matter, transforming it into a source of healing and restoration for her listeners.
Describing the creative process behind ‘Flatline’, Angelica explains: “Our world is bleeding, and somehow, we’ve lost our way as a people. ‘Flatline’ ponders the state of our country that is overcome with such chaos, hatred, and senseless violence. Specifically, it was inspired by my sister, a travel nurse, who was in the vicinity of a mass shooting. Luckily, she is still with us today, but I realize that a growing number of people are faced with a different outcome.”.
