Last year, I discovered a tune called ‘Made Of’ by an award-winning Maryland-based spiritual pop artist, Cynthia Angelica. I fell deeply in love with the delicate and ethereal piece of music, and have been waiting patiently to hear from the gifted musician again. Then, yesterday, up popped ‘Unsteady’, Cynthia’s latest offering. A track that will form part of her forthcoming debut album ‘Fears and Dreams’, ‘Unsteady’ is two minutes of sonic intrigue and heartfelt vulnerability.
Composed in a single sitting at the piano, Angelica commented that the song flowed out of her spontaneously in just half an hour. “There were a lot of negative thoughts swirling around in my head about my aptitude for building a career in music,” she says. “And even more broadly, my ability to find a sense of belonging as a human being on this planet”.
It’s a haunting and rather dark arrangement, but one that is utterly captivating and gripping at the same time. Attempting to bring the harmful voices out of her head and into the open, ‘Unsteady’ serves as a reminder that one often needs to go through the darkness in order to find the light.
‘Fears and Dreams’ can’t come soon enough. It’s a record that promises to be pioneering and inventive, showcasing Cynthia’s unique artistic vision!
