Receiving good soul-pop records hasn’t been a very frequent event lately. Today though, we are lucky. German talent Cris Cap unveils a short EP that’s a triumph of colours, elegance and lusciousness. Blending modern R&B sentiments with timeless soul, acid jazz and funk stylings, Cap manages to wrap the listeners into positive musical goodness, both in lyrical and sonic terms.
In fact, there’s quite a bit of technical proficiency in ‘Howlin’ At The Moon’. The three-track EP showcases a nuanced and playful jazz flavour which perfectly compliments Cris’ mellow, soft vocal tone. The record’s title track opens the listening experience in true vintage flair, with a groovy and cheerful soul gem championing love and warm feelings… what more could you want?
‘Angel In My Room’ is decisively more modern, at least in its production, and perhaps in the carefully crafted vocal harmonies too (Craig David anyone?). ‘Show My Love’ closes the EP with the help of Tyla Raé’s mesmerising vocals. A blend of Vulfpeck-like energy, 80s sax ad-libs and neo-soul charisma.
