It’s always exciting to observe the debut effort of a clearly talented artist. Not only because of the novelty that could come with their sonic offering, but also because it is essentially a highly courageous act. To share your artistry with strangers, well, that takes character. CORI SIMONE certainly has it, having debuted only recently with a majestic and hypnotising single, ‘Pause’. Showcasing her drive and nuanced artistic vision, the track also marks the journey towards SIMONE’s debut album, ‘R-80’.
It’s rather difficult to describe ‘Pause’, mostly given its complex and innovative take on electronic pop. The starting point can be found at the intersection between electronica, trap, and pop, channelling dark textures, broken beats, thumping sub-bass and ethereal, almost bucolic vocal harmonies. It all creates a series of contrasts: the bright and angelic vocals, layered on the gritty and haunting synth matter, for instance. Eventually, the listeners will feel lost, yet at peace, with the record introducing them to CORI SIMONE’s personal sonic universe, a place we wish we’d never leave.
Eventually, you’ll have to. Not to worry though, the replay button is very accessible. Lyrically, ‘Pause’ explores the correlation between wanting to start fresh and not being keen on running away. If this is anything to go by, we are in for a treat. Looking forward to hearing more.
