Coma Beach Complete the Tryptic with ‘Passion/Bliss’

We have been following Coma Beach for a while, and it’s always interesting to observe the way they are honouring their past records. In particular, much work has been put into celebrating the 30th anniversary of their debut album ‘The Scapegoat’s Agony’, originally released in 1995. Based in Germany, Coma Beach navigates the divide between new wave and post-punk, also entering heavy metal territories, from time to time.

‘Passion/Bliss’ completes the tryptic of releases related to the aforementioned debut album, and it’s sort of a time capsule: hearing such fuzzy and lo-fi guitar tones is a truly nostalgic moment, yet a stark reminder that the music landscape has changed, but not so much. In fact, Coma Beach were pretty futuristic at the time, managing to build a timeless, always relevant sound. ‘Passion/Bliss’ is the strongest evidence of that.

From a lyrical standpoint, the EP is deeply meaningful, thanks to the nuanced lyrical picture behind ‘The Scapegoat’s Agony’. As the German group explains: “The album title is an allusion to the play “Waiting for Godot” by Irish playwright and novelist Samuel Beckett and points towards the – for the most part – painful and excruciating emotional odyssey of the unnamed antihero.”
