What do I look for in a record? Usually, it’s an intangible property, a feature that relates to the way I personally experience music. It can be described as an overwhelming sense of euphoria, a conviction to have stumbled upon the right pick. Also, a sense of familiarity, yet not in the traditional sense – I am not looking for familiar references – more in terms of vibe and emotions.
‘Grateful’ is the perfect example of that: from its first seconds, I was completely absorbed by its vivid shoegaze and post-punk formula, malleable sonic goodness that’s both dreamy and hard-hitting, nostalgic and melancholic. Guitars are lush, almost blissful at times, but they also know when to dig in, wrapping the track in a triumph of coarse tones.
Color Palette are the talented humans behind such a masterpiece. Hailing from D.C., the group has made a name for themselves already – I am not the only one noticing how incredible they are. Delving deeper into the inspiration behind ‘Grateful’, they explain: “It’s an ode to the idea of being shaped and strengthened by adversity”.
