CØLDSTAR Return with Gloomy Record ‘I See A Light’

We have been hypnotised by Swiss group CØLDSTAR once before, and honestly, we still remember it pretty well. Their sound is dark, obscure and cold – exactly what it says on the tin. Writing about ‘Sleepless’, we proudly declared: “The listener will likely rejoice in such a vibrant and hard-hitting aesthetic”. We stand by our word; ‘I See A Light’ continues the project’s leftfield tradition, blending retro synthetisers with new-wave style lyricism.

Introduced by a pretty German-sounding production, reminiscent of Kraftwerk, CØLDSTAR seems to be focusing on a more industrial offering, leaving behind the poppy, synth-pop flair we found in their previous record. ‘I See A Light’ is instead gloomy and dramatic, both on a sonic and songwriting plane. Martin Baumann’s evocative vocals are a perfect match for the record. Michael Freund takes care of the programming.

Speaking about the inspiration behind the song, the pair explains: “It describes the sensory overload in today’s world, in which everything seems blurred and surreal. But we can find peace within and find real experience and beauty in silence despite the unreality of our surroundings.”
