The name Claudio Olachea might not be familiar to the keen reader, yet they are bound to have heard his scores on TV shows and movies worldwide. An acclaimed and award-winning composer, the Los Angeles-based creative has recently explored deeper into his artistry, aiming to reconnect with his Mexican heritage in the best way he can: through music. ‘Hoy Como Ayer’ is the resulting piece, a stunning slice of orchestral lusciousness and Mexican melodies.
Aided by a 10-piece mariachi band and a 3-piece rhythm section, Olachea recorded the single at Valentine Recording Studios, a ‘time capsule’ geared up with a lot of vintage equipment. Such a particular location gave Claudio the tools he needed to develop a nostalgic record, a lovable and vibrant composition steeped in vintage memories, yet still relevant for today’s eclectic world.
As Olachea so eloquently explains: “After years of writing for film and TV, I’ve started to see visuals in my head whenever I create music. It’s like my brain automatically syncs the sound to a scene. So when I was thinking about the scene I was envisioning for Hoy Como Ayer, I knew the music had to capture the timeless, nostalgic visuals I was seeing. I wanted the listener to feel like they were being transported to another time, but still feel totally in the moment.”
