Describing ‘In the Light’ as his “first attempt at singing and songwriting”, American creative Chris Combs sounds almost disrespectful to fellow artists – just causally and effortlessly dropping an absolute gem of a record as his ‘singing’ debut. We are more than happy with that, not just because of the single’s eclectic character and hazy production, but also because his vocals do truly work.
Layered into luscious harmonies and catchy melodies (some reminiscent of Animal Collective, among others), Combs’ vocal tone reaches the highest depth of self-expression, wrapping the listeners into a shiny, luscious sonic universe that’s healing and cathartic. Contrasting such heavenly energy, we have the guitars’ sharp, fuzzy tones, and the rolling drum grooves. Overall, such a compelling compositional formula achieves exactly what its goal was: total, undivided attention.
