‘DIRT!’ is the killer debut single from Melbourne-based rapper and musician Chilli Reid, and it’s hands down one of the smoothest, silkiest, and most lush tunes I’ve heard all year. Featuring fellow Melbourne up-and-comer Squid the Kid, ‘DIRT!’ gives off serious Mac Miller vibes. With a laidback beat provided by producer Eeryskies, and a bassline that could have come straight out of Thundercat’s catalogue, it’s a ridiculously intoxicating, summery, funky, and jazzy little track. Both Reid and Squid showcase their intricate and masterful MC’ing ability, along with their mesmerizing ability to weave stories through their lyrics.
The song’s title serves as a motif and a poignant reminder that things born from nothingness have the capacity to dissolve back into nothingness. “The feeling of being nothing but dirt can lead to the growth of something beautiful,” says Chilli. “Like this song”.
Once again, 2023 continues to gift us with unbelievably good debut music. Production-wise, ‘DIRT!’ is up there with the very best, and Chilli Reid is an artist you’re going to want to keep a close eye (and ear) on! Turning to the likes of Loyle Carner, Rejjie Snow, and of course Mac Miller for inspiration, we cannot wait to hear more from this talented musician!
