Returning to the musical scene after a period of introspection and personal growth, English songstress Charlotte Carpenter continues a journey that’s been a long time coming. Active since 2014, the talented trobairitz made quite a splash in the British capital, before settling down in East Midlands. In fact, the author of this article remembers catching one of her shows in London, back in 2015 (circa). A phenomenal songwriter, Carpenter now introduces her latest album ‘A Modern Rage’, a tale of rebellion and conflict drenched in resilience and personal redemption.
Featuring eleven tracks, the record stems from Charlotte’s signature eclecticism, balanced between bluesy sleazyness and elegant pop elements. Together with her trusty guitar(s), she delivers a dynamic and multi-faceted album, crowning it with relatable and evocative vocals. Carpenter’s first pot of original material since 2019, ‘A Modern Rage’ finds its lyrical inspiration within the boundaries of an ill-fated and emotionally abusive professional relationship with her former male producer.
As she explains: “I stopped listening to my own instincts and I handed over creative control – I was scared of him.” Eventually, Carpenter found her way back to radical authenticity, cutting ties and rebuilding her artistry step-by-step. ‘A Modern Rage’ signals the exit on the other side of that painful experience. We are glad she’s back, finally occupying the space that was always hers.
