While the name Chapelton might not mean much to the uninitiated, the human behind it is well known to music industry insiders, being a revered, proficient songwriter. Boasting over 100 million streams, 3 Billboard #1’s and over 15 top 20 worldwide hits, Mike Macdermid has recently taken it upon himself to release original material. ‘Oh Lover’ is the latest evidence of that, a soothing, heartwarming ballad sung with fellow creative Charlotte Churchman.
The sonic references are very elegant. A mixture of gentle Folk, Country and Americana, ‘Oh Lover’ doesn’t seek to reinvent the wheel, instead focusing on Chapelton’s nuanced lyricism and his evocative, tender vocals, incredibly welcoming and relatable. The song is really good, which is not a surprise given that’s Macdermid’s speciality. Hailing from Scotland, he seems to have big plans for the future, and we wouldn’t expect anything less.
Recorded between Nashville and Aberdeen, ‘Oh Lover’ feels like a strong promise. Judging by the other singles published this year by Chapelton, it’s clear he’s not wasting any time – we’ll follow his journey carefully, and so should you.
