Emerging from Los Angeles, Centershift boast a period-corrected alt-rock sound, using a formula true to the genre’s roots. Is this 2001? No, but it feels like it. If you are in your thirties (and listened to Hoobastank), you are bound to connect with the American band, which collects a group of extraordinary musicians, all sharing a past at the forefront of the alt-rock craze. Centershift’s latest release takes the shape of an EP, ‘Of…’, a 6-track record that features radio-friendly gems together with grittier, rawer bangers.
Now, you might not know it, but the group’s head honcho, Jasan Radford, is also the founder of Onesidezero, which back in 2001 was one of the freshest alt-rock/grunge outfits around, earning them a signing on Madonna’s Maverick label. Joined by Ryan Shane Stuber, Ted Wenri, and Stefan Storace, Centershift carries the same intense lyricism and delicate poignancy, almost a witty rock formula.
Starting with the previously released single ‘And So’, ‘Of…’ quickly moves on to perhaps our favourite track, ‘From Where We Are’, a bath into the best emotional alt-rock, featuring a chorus to die for. Rudford’s vocals play the part perfectly, reminding us again why he got Onesidezero signed to one of the biggest record companies around. ‘Falling Into’ introduces haunting vibes, also raising the tempo (and the stakes). ‘Arise’, ‘Everything and Nothing’ and ‘What If’ bring the record to a close, fully wrapping the listener into their walls of sound.
Overall, this is a great record, if miss true alt-rock, you will love Centershift.
