A highly conceptual piece, ‘Truth and Reconciliation’ is some of the most unique and authentic music we have heard this year. Abstract, inspirational and unconventional, the track opens with a series of bucolic electronic textures, interlaced with sudden heavy metal matter. Raw, distorted guitars seem to find a place next to haunting strings and dreamy synth tones, eventually leaving space for a bucolic piano and a series of industrial noises.
Penned by American musician and creative Cargocastle in true DIY fashion, the record is a highly personal body of work, deeply drenched in the Altoona-based talent’s life experiences. As he explains: “‘Truth and Reconciliation’ was born after a round of intense PTSD flashbacks centred around the childhood abuse I endured. For the first time in my life, I created music during the healing process as opposed to simply listening to music to stay grounded.”
The DIY production process makes a lot of sense when related to the extensive meaning behind the track. Simply, it’s an exercise in self-expression, dragging us into Cargocastle’s fragmented and nuanced musical sensibility. This likely won’t be a record for everyone, but the ones brave enough to delve into it will find it very rewarding.
