Calum MacColl has been at the top of the music industry for over 35 years, working with high-profile international artists as a musician, musical director, producer, songwriter, and guitarist. But his impressive career isn’t the only thing that sets him apart – he comes from a remarkable musical lineage. As the son of folk legends Peggy Seeger and Ewan MacColl, half-brother to Kirsty MacColl, and nephew of US folk hero Pete Seeger, MacColl has music and artistry in his blood.
Now, at the age of 58, MacColl has finally released his first solo album, ‘About Time’. The album deals with themes of loss, mental health, and anxiety, and was born out of a mental health crisis triggered by the untimely death of MacColl’s best friend and long-time musical collaborator Colin Vearncombe (aka Black).
‘About Time’ is an eclectic and dynamic record, always showcasing its author’s passionate yet witty storytelling. Drawing inspiration from the human experience, MacColl build a fictitious scenario where listeners will hopefully be able to find positivity and hope for the future. The songs on the album call and respond to one another in the finest tradition of good songwriting. The powerful groove of the album opener ‘Good Enough’ challenges MacColl’s own imposter syndrome, while the expansive yet intimate ‘Cosmonaut’ is a personal tribute to Vearncombe.
Overall, ‘About Time’ is a powerful reflection on loss, mental health, and the search for hope in difficult times. Despite its heavy themes, the album is ultimately a celebration of the human spirit and our ability to overcome adversity.
