When listening to ‘Matryoshka’, the emotional charge was almost overwhelming. A strong sense of fragility characterises the record, together with a veiled feeling of nostalgia, making the track a particularly poignant and introspective offering, certainly one of the best in Calon’s short but intense catalogue. Debuting in 2020, the London creative instantly showcased a knack for acoustic, soothing and evocative material, perfectly fitting his dynamic, slightly gritty vocal tone.
When you put it all together, it is clear Calon’s on to something worthwhile. How could it not be? In an industry where records sound artificial and crowded more often than not, the British songwriter is a breath of fresh air, a hypnotising analogue distraction in a synthetic world.
Marking Calon’s first single of the year, ‘Matryoshka’ also expands the sonic narrative a fair bit, introducing light textures and a fuller arrangement, although always through a feathery touch. Lyrically, the song explores the fallout of a relationship, reflecting on lost love and past expectation. As Calon explains: “a sobering look on a love that once was, but also the kind of love that teaches us a lot about ourselves and who we can be.”
