In a way, one could consider ‘Halfway House’ a textbook indie record. Built over a seemingly low-effort production, repeating guitar riffs and honest, open-hearted vocals, the single fits all of the boxes that characterize a well-thought-out sleazy track. Leaving sonic embellishment behind, ‘Halfway House’ flourishes over its nuanced and meaningful message, pure storytelling delivered by the two talented humans behind the project.
Hailing from California, Alex Carr and Will Kahn are the creative entities fuelling Lonely Richard, a project that sees them delving deep into what they call ‘atmospheric indie rock’, or simply put, musical stylings that are easily relatable, successfully creating a bridge between them and the listeners. Lyrically, ‘Halfway House’ deals with the whirlwind of emotional thinking following a breakup.
As Lonely Richard explain: “The song is about getting stuck in a liminal headspace where rational thought processes are eclipsed by overwhelming feelings. Structurally, the song analogizes the sensation of being stuck in an emotional feedback loop— it builds to a propulsive emotional climax, but instead of reaching a new conclusion, resolves to the opening motif.”
