‘Emancipation’ is the highly anticipated seventh album from renowned Canadian singer/songwriter Caleb Hart, and features seven tunes which mark a distinct moment in the artist’s career. Reflecting his eclectic and innovative approach to Caribbean music, the genre-blending record fuses elements of reggae, dancehall, and even hip-hop (see ‘Voices’). Described by Caleb as “Island soul”, the musician’s sound sits somewhere between paying homage to his heritage and blazing his own trail simultaneously.
‘Lambeau’ gets the ball rolling in a seriously laidback and chilled-out fashion. Caleb eases the listener into his sonic world gently, teeing them up for the mystifying and immersive title track that follows. ‘Emancipation’ is a little piece of upbeat reggae brilliance – and it’s a song that’s stuck with me ever since I first heard it.
‘Voices’ is perhaps the most experimental offering on the album, though ‘Step Closer’ might want a word, before an almost psychedelic one-minute interlude separates the tunes on the record.
Our journey ends with ‘Riddim Man (Freestyle)’ and ‘Homeland (refix), and you know the rules by now. Explore them at your own leisure. Embrace them. Free your mind and go on their aural adventure…It’s worth it!
