A small break is often very beneficial. After debuting last year with bubbly gem ‘How Not To Start a Fight’, Welsh songstress Caitlin Lavagna took some time to regroup and deal with some important life decisions, allowing her to get over a crucial artistic deadlock. ‘Night Bus’ is the song that meets us on the other side, and needless to say, it feels like a definite step up. It appears as if something has finally clicked, with Lavagna offering her listeners a luscious, intense pop gem, highlighting a powerful, anthemic vocal tone.
Introduced as a slow-tempo, mellow ballad, the first part of the record is the perfect reckoning with Caitlin’s vocals, able to jump from low to high registries with minimal effort. It doesn’t take long before a beefier instrumental section comes in, showcasing Lavagna’s drumming skills and her love for groovy and intricate arrangements. Eventually, we get served with a catchy, memorable chorus, boasting the kind of topline you would expect to hear in an arena show. Speaking about arenas, the drum solo in the track is pretty impressive, showcasing an artist that’s perfectly at home with both lyrical and musical matter.
Moving back to Wales after a few years in London, Lavagna seems to have found the clarity needed to pursue her unfiltered, raw artistic expression. And we are here for it. Describing the process of finally leaving the British capital and writing ‘Night Bus’, she describes: “Working 40 hours a week, burning money on everything apart from your career, going around in circles and seeing the worst of a city you thought would give you your big break. As a young Welsh Actor Musician, I experienced this recently when deciding to finally leave London and move home to the Rhondda.”
