Bunny Alex came crashing into my world when she released ‘Easy Game’, a refreshing blend of vulnerability and optimism wrapped up in a chewy and delectable pop song. Then came ‘Soft Spot’, a soothing and reflective gem that I instantly fell in love with, and it was becoming abundantly clear that we needed to get to know Bunny a little better!
Thrilled that she agreed to an interview, Bunny takes us behind the scenes of how ‘Easy Game’ and ‘Soft Spot’ came together. She also gives us a glimpse into some of her biggest influences and chats about who she dreams of collaborating with in the future. So…Without further ado, please give a big welcome to our friend Bunny Alex!
Hey Bunny, I’m extremely excited to re-introduce you to our ever-expanding audience! I love discovering artists still in their relative infancy musically! Before we get into the nitty-gritty, could you tell us a little bit about your musical journey? When did your love affair with music begin?
This might sound a bit cliché, but I’ve been making music all my life. I’ve always loved pop music but also listened to classical music, bossa nova, and hip-hop when I was younger. I learned to play the violin as a child but always loved singing as well. I’d come up with little songs with my sister and friends, but it took some time before I actually wrote a proper song and found my voice as an artist and songwriter. During COVID, I moved to Liverpool to study music, and I’ve been here ever since.
Now, as you might recall, my introduction to your music was via your previous single ‘Easy Game’. It was a tune I proudly labelled “honest and emotive but also light and fun, relatable and utterly infectious”. What do you want the world to know about ‘Easy Game’?
Thanks again for your kind review! I feel like those words describe ’Easy Game’ really well. It was one of the first upbeat songs I wrote that I really liked, and I’m so proud of it. I really like that happy-sad contrast in songs, where the music is upbeat and fun but the lyrics are more emotional and even sad. For anyone who has ever had the displeasure of experiencing unrequited love, this song is for you.
Now, onto your brand new release ‘Soft Spot’. I’ve fallen in love once again! It’s just so dreamy and full of nostalgia! What does the song mean to you and do you remember when the idea for it first popped into your head?
I know my saying I like this song is like a mother calling her own baby cute, but this song is so special! I have written a lot of heartbreak songs, songs about unrequited love, songs about getting over someone…but until I wrote ’Soft Spot’ I hadn’t written a song about just being in love and being happy. I think heartbreak and pain are over-romanticised sometimes, and I think writing something so honest was very therapeutic. The lyrics really poured out of me and came together so fast. I hope people who need that kind of positivity resonate with the song!
Who would you put down as some of your biggest musical influences and who would you ultimately credit for helping shape and mould your overall sound?
As I mentioned, I’m a big pop girl, so I have to mention Taylor Swift. Her music was the soundtrack to my youth and I have learned so much from her music and artistry. I love Lorde as well, she’s such a cool performer and artist and seeing her embrace and be herself has given me so much confidence. There are so many cool artists out there that have shaped me – MUNA, Joji, The Japanese House, Lana del Rey, Melanie Martinez, Nao…there are so many!
What does “being successful” in the music industry look like to you? And is it something that you think about when creating new music?
Defining what “being successful“ looks like is hard because it kind of changes all the time. I would love for my music to reach people who really resonate with and appreciate it, and for it to create a community of like-minded people who enjoy good pop music. I would love to tour globally, meet my listeners and be able to work on cool projects with cool people. Of course, I would love for every song that I write to be a success, but I don’t think about it like that when I’m writing. It’s more about whether I like the song or not. If I like it, I’m sure other people will too!
German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche said, “Without music, life would be a mistake.” What would your life look like without music in it and what fills your days when you’re not busy creating?
I genuinely can’t imagine a life without music, it’s such a big part of my identity and world. I enjoy baking (and anything sweet), reading a good book, watching Gilmore Girls, learning languages, and watching Sims content. Most of these activities involve playing music in the background though!
If you were allowed to collaborate with any musician or band, who would you choose and why?
I’d love to work with any of the artists I mentioned previously, it would be such an honour! It’s also been a dream of mine to collaborate with Jack Antonoff, he has worked on so many of my favourite projects and songs. There are so many cool producers and writers that I’d love to work with – BJ Burton, Daniel Nigro, Phoebe Bridgers…all of these people are so good at what they do and I’d love to just watch them at work, I’d probably learn so much!
