I’ll be honest with you all: I truly love ‘What is understanding’. A crepuscular, poignant and experimental record, the album champions hazy, misty tones, jumping from shoegaze-like guitar riffing to intimate indietronica, absorbing the last twenty years of musical history with ease and taste. Penned by Norwegian hero BUKVE, ‘What is understanding’ contains something for everyone.
From melancholic Californian anthems such as ‘Empty words’ – straight from an early ‘2000 teen TV show – to the liquid opener ‘Alive’, perhaps the closer thing to shoegaze in the record. ‘Do you believe’ flourishes instead over a sea of textures and soundscapes, showcasing BUKVE’s eclectic influences and inspirations.
‘Spell of a goon’ is true electronica euphoria, as it is the darker ‘Buy butterflies’, true dark-wave core. Overall, ‘What is understanding’ deserves to be discovered track by track, enjoying the multi-faceted musical journey BUKVE embarks on. The record was recorded at Black Valley Studios in Oslo, and produced by Stamos Koliousis.
