The first thing I did today was pour myself a coffee and listen to the latest album from Buko Shane. Hailing from Helsinki, the band’s new release, ‘Pandemic Blues’, is an eleven-track offering that marks a shift from their previous rock style to a more acoustic and minimalist approach. Written and recorded during and after the COVID-19 pandemic, the act mentions that the record was inspired by “feelings, moods, and experiences during four long and crazy years”. Let’s dive in shall we?
‘Another Sunday Morning’ gets the ball rolling exquisitely. A haunting acoustic guitar meets Nick Cave-esque vocals, whisking the listener away to a reflective space where raw and poignant lyrics resonate deeply, echoing the emotions of the past few years. ‘Long Winter’ then follows in a similar melancholic fashion, and features a wailing electric guitar and a few delicate piano taps.
‘I Should Let You Go’ is another absolute stunner with a folky and heart-wrenching arrangement, while ‘Just Another Band’ takes a contemplative look at a weathered musician’s life on the road.
Other personal favourites include ‘For Nick’, ‘My Old Companion’, and ‘Son My Sun’. Truthfully, however, the entire album deserves your full and undivided attention. It’s simply beautiful!
