There’s a strong amount of pathos in ‘Storm’ – an overwhelming sense of authenticity and honesty, wrapping the listeners in cathartic and transformative energy. It’s certainly refreshing; defying the modern predicament for over-polished records, Brian Hingerty arms himself with a pair of guitars and his raw, unfiltered vocals, sharing descriptive and introspective lyricism into an expressive and soulful nuggets of nostalgia.
A short track, ‘Storm’ will be over in around two minutes. What takes place in that time though, is Hingerty’s melancholic storytelling, delivered with unmatched charisma and unwavering commitment to the cause. In particular, Brian layers a carpet of arpeggiated acoustic guitar, then infuses it all with an evocative vocal tone which feels sacred, instantly commanding the attention. Later on, a luscious steel guitar adds textures to an already compelling track.
A wonderful example of simplicity; music is expression, and expression requires honesty. Honesty, in turn, requires simplicity, and the ability to connect with listeners. Hingerty focuses on the crepuscular vibe of late summer, as he explains: “‘Storm’ reflects the palpable mood change when thunderstorms habitually shower London at the end of every summer, signalling the end of summer’s intoxicating mania.”
