“It is pop, but you’ve never heard music like this before”. These are the words of the Serbian act Bones in Butter, an eclectic and lively bunch who have just released their first full-length album ‘Songs for a Sane Society’. Dealing with themes of alienation, survival, virtual realities, and the rise and fall of tyrants, the band are also quick to point out that it centers around love and hope. Hey, I told you they were eclectic!
‘So Alone’ is the opening tune and sets a psychedelic and innovative precedent. Beckoning listeners into an unexplored realm of sound, it’s an exciting and intoxicating start. ‘Littlewing’ then follows in a swayful and dreamy manner with hypnotic sliding guitars and some beautiful vocal harmonies between Milutin Krasevic and Luna Skopelja.
‘They Live’ then steps up to the plate with a gritty and rocky atmosphere before ‘A Dystopian Love Song’ takes us back down to earth in sublime fashion. It’s no wonder the band’s influences are so varied and wide-ranging; Lou Reed, ELO, Joy Division, and The Stranglers to name a few.
With ten more songs still lying in wait, I shall leave you to discover them on your own! All I’ll say is this…’Songs for a Sane Society’ is an absolute sonic adventure from start to finish and it deserves your full and undivided attention!
