Packed with dreamy tones and psych intensity, ‘Shadows’ is an incredibly nuanced offering, even elegant. Inspired by some of the modern greats in the genre – namely Mac DeMarco and Tame Impala – the record offers a slice of blissfulness and hallucinatory poignancy, wrapping the listeners into a peculiar and cathartic sonic universe. If you are looking for escapism, you just found it.
Empowered by fuzzy guitar tones, ‘Shadows’ sees North Carolina music explorer Blue Karma indulge in an introspective and relatable tale of human consciousness, giving in to the ‘dark side’ – even just for a mere three minutes, three unforgettable minutes. Known as Jacob Adams by day, Blue Karma boasts impressive musical prowess, being a multi-instrumentalist and band leader.
Speaking about the inspiration behind ‘Shadows’, the American creative explains: “‘Shadows’ is one of my most vulnerable tracks themed on depression. It’s one of those tracks that doesn’t necessarily sound sad, but has dark lyrics. It speaks on the conflict of feeling the need to suppress your feelings, hence the lyrics ‘drowning in the shadows’”.
