Blake Pays Homage to Power Pop in ‘Louder Than Sound’

There’s a lot to unpack about ‘Louder Than Sound’, although, at a basic level, the record celebrates the nuanced musicianship of its author, English troubadour Blake. Boasting a long experience in the British music industry, with militancy in indie outfit Karma Truffle, he has now embarked on a solo project, something that suits him very well. Highlighting the powerful songwriting Blake is capable of, we find the aforementioned album, a rather nostalgic affair.

You see, ‘Louder Than Sound’ is a power pop manifesto, a lovable, honest approach to friendly rock and pop influences, then distilled into a formula that’s akin to the likes of The Beatles and Badfinger. The net has been cast pretty wide: the record contains elements from the last forty years of music history, further crowned by Blake’s vibrant and melancholic vocals, able of fierce loudness as they are of evocative softness.

Out now via Subjangle, ‘Louder Than Sound’ is further proof of Blake’s longstanding mission towards artistic glory. With this latest album, he just might find it. As he explains: “This is my attempt to craft a long-player of songs that loosely fit the brief of ‘Power Pop’ – catchy three-minute, hook-laden guitar-led songs.”
