‘Hellos and Frowns’ is the enormously personal and wonderful new single from Bird Machine, an Australian-New Zealand duo consisting of Luke and Jenna Grbin. Inspired to write a song from the unique perspective of their beloved child who is on the autism spectrum, Luke and Jenna have concocted an innovative sonic blend. 90s alternative rock meets dream-pop woven together with infectious and memorable pop melodies and, in less than three minutes, Bird Machine produce one of the most unforgettable tunes of the year so far.
Jenna’s powerful and dynamic vocal performance is truly one for the books, as she showcases ridiculous range, control, and an emotional depth that has blown me away. Effortlessly gliding from quieter moments to more soaring ones, her deep connection to the lyrics makes every word feel like it’s being intimately revealed to you personally.
Alongside the track, Bird Machine has also put out a cracking music video, directed by filmmaker Anthony Butters. Split into three acts, it portrays the range of emotions that their son experiences, and we are proud to share it with you below. ‘Hellos and Frowns’ has utterly captured my heart and, with the duo currently recording their second EP, I can’t wait to hear from them again!
