Emerging from Berlin’s kaleidoscopic musical scene, indie-pop outfit ORA BLU draws inspiration from the leftfield and folktronica scenes of the 2010s while infusing a newly found groovy quality to them, directly linked to R’n’B elements and Soulful sensibilities. Debuting earlier this year with ‘On Repeat’, the trio revealed itself as a peculiar blend of Jungle, Chet Faker and Nicolas Jaar, with a nod to the latter’s side project Darkside. What’s new in ORA BLU though, is their quirkiness, their vocal duetting and their lyrical poignancy.
The project’s latest effort makes its way to us with ‘The Kiss’. Continuing in the direction set up by its predecessor, the record widens the band’s pop horizon, showcasing their songwriting prowess in full force. Yes, because ‘The Kiss’ possesses a real catchy chorus, uplifting and exciting. The intimate sonic background works very well, thanks to a polite disco groove, claps-like percussions, blues-flavoured guitars and a thick bass playing the funkiest bassline. Dancing is for sure on the card, when hearing ‘The Kiss’. Trust us!
Overall, ORA BLU are a great listen. It is music with purpose, never too loud, never too subtle, just the right amount of presence. Sort of those magical moments, when – at dusk or dawn – the sun paints a celestial blue light on our earth. That’s exactly what ORA BLU stands for, in Italian.
