Making music with purpose: Berne have understood the assignment. A crepuscular and nuanced alt/dream pop duo, the London-based outfit has long championed environmental activism as an art form, infusing their work and lyricism with a deep appreciation and love towards planet Earth. Such predisposition for generational change is certainly evident in Berne’s latest effort, ‘789’, their debut album.
In it, keen listeners will rejoice in the limitless and spacious sound design, featuring gloomy textures and melancholic guitar tones, together with minimalistic electronica. The result is a highly detailed and sonically rich record, balanced between alt-pop and trip-hop, yet carrying an overwhelming aura of mystery and eclecticism. The melancholic vibe in ‘789’ is easily explained when referring to the underlying concept behind its title. 789 is the number of extinct species in the last 400 years.
Expanding on the inspiration behind the record, Berne explains: “We are thrilled to be sharing 789, a body of work that has taken us on an exploration of sound and mind during a couple of really difficult years for the world. There’s pain, frustration, sadness, anger, hopelessness, and hiding; but we hope that knowing that none of us are alone in dealing with this provides some refuge.”
Proud to have been designated as an EU Climate Pact Ambassador for Malta, Berne also take part in EarthPercent, donating a portion of their royalties to environmental causes.
