benwork Shares Personal and Liquid Gem ‘Original Sin’

A liquid, dreamy and ethereal record, ‘Original Sin’ is highly quirky in its sonic charge. Built over psychedelic, shoegaze-like stylings, it’s a slice of foggy euphoria, a misty enchanting journey into benwork‘s personal experience, a story of mental health and dissociation stemming from a troubled past. Based in Colorado, the talented creative builds a slightly lo-fi sound, making brilliant use of his own evocative vocals.

They feel otherworldly, almost disconnected from the real world, incredibly dynamic and two-dimensional. In fact, there’s a healthy dose of vintage energy in it too, together with a certain indie and bedroom pop flair, something that comes alive especially when taking a closer look at the project’s productions, quite minimal and compromising. Truthfully, that’s the best setting possible for the song’s lyricism.

As benwork explains: “It is a song about depersonalization, which I used to have very frequent episodes of when I was in my early 20s. I wrote the song in the midst of an episode while on tour with my band in Idaho, and recorded it DIY at my friend’s home studio in Santa Fe. Lyrically, I tried to portray the sensation I was dealing with by giving a sense of uncertainty and confusion, essentially having a conversation with myself to try and find some grounding.”
