Don’t you love a debut album? For a band, that’s a big deal. The euphoria and expectations surrounding it can make or break a project. Selecting the best songs, making sure there’s some sort of musical and lyrical concept behind it… It certainly is a big milestone for every serious outfit. Boston rockers Benmozes understood the assignment correctly, delivering a record that feels mature, dynamic and energetic, helping the band reach the ears of listeners worldwide. It certainly reached ours: ‘IMMIGRANT’ is an incredible statement of intent, birthed by a group that has the willingness to delve into dark, punchy and poignant material.
First appearing on the scenes just before the pandemic, Benmozes have been releasing a plethora of singles, allowing us to catch a glimpse of their furious and unfiltered identity. What we appreciate about their sound is the grittiness and the heavy distortions applied with class and charm, allowing the tracks to still be relatable and rather melodious.
‘IMMIGRANT’ collects 10 songs, all crucial in fully understanding what the project stands for. You could start with ‘Witches and Slaves’, one of the most indie-flavoured pieces in the album. Take in that glorious topline: the title track ‘Immigrant’ will soon kidnap you to hard-rock town. ‘Ominous’ is a decisively unusual offering, showcasing the more mellow, solemn and anthemic side of Benmozes. We love it!
