Looking at the record’s visual accompaniment, one can easily notice an Oberheim synthesizer being used, one of the most iconic instruments of the 80s. Such an element sets the scene for what comes shortly after – a flurry of 80s extravaganza and chart-topping synth-pop, delivered by the sapient producing hands of Benjamin Race. Teaming up with evocative R&B vocalist Donna Odain, the British musician builds a nostalgic soul-powered anthem – ‘Memories’ – reminiscent of the musical bubble around 1984/1987.
The listening experience is enriching, with mellow and rich digital tones next to analogue patches; it’s essentially a compilation of some of the most notable sounds of that decade. Bright bells and charming electric pianos are right at home, next to chorused, groovy guitars and punchy drum machines.
Odain’s vocals are a perfect match for such a gorgeous arrangement. Her luscious and majestic soulful tone ties the song together, making ‘Memories’ a true time machine – one we don’t mind getting into.
