Belly Rachel Reflects on Inappropriate Male Behaviour in ‘Cynical’

While ‘Cynical’ flourishes on its sonic qualities, it’s fair to say that the record finds strengths in its relatable and truthful lyricism, something that we are confident will help it reach a wider audience. Penned by Malaysia-born, Glasgow-based singer-songwriter Belly Rachel, ‘Cynical’ is built over energetic and charming pop-rock stylings, perfectly fitting such a melancholic and fierce song, an anthem towards inappropriate male behaviours – a theme that seems to never find its resolution.

The record is part of Rachel’s creative awakening, after making the move from Malaysia to the UK only last year. Benefitting from an environment that’s more open and truthful (but that let her down when it comes to creepy men), Belly aims to conquer her deserving place in the industry, echoing the likes of Alanis Morissette, Joni Mitchell and Phoebe Bridgers.

Delving into the inspiration behind ‘Cynical’, Rachel explains: “I wrote this song after an unfortunate encounter with a pervert while I was out walking my dog in Glasgow. I went home shaken as hell, more out of rage than fear, at the fact that I’m about to turn thirty and things like this still happen to me to this day.”
