‘Brother, When We Burn’ is the perfect tune to begin one’s Monday and get the week up and running. The track gently fuses elements of indie dreamy pop and shoegaze – and comes courtesy of Norwegian indie artist Arne-Johan Rauan, better known simply as Bellman.
Built around a raw Rumba rhythm the musician just had “lying around”, Bellman has created a truly intoxicating piece of music. “I have recently, somewhat randomly, become a collector of vintage rhythms boxes,” says the artist. “And I just love the beats usually found in old living room organs”.
Beautifully assembled and layered, ‘Brother, When We Burn’ also showcases an exceptional vocal performance from Rauan. Hypnotic and ethereal, Bellman says the song is mostly about staying true to oneself and not overthinking the opinion of others. “That’s how you become happy, I think. It’s not so important what you do, but that you do it with intention and passion”.
Fast-becoming one of my favourite new tunes of the year, ‘Brother, When We Burn’ is just a dreamy and atmospheric gem that has so much to offer. I’m a little ashamed to admit this is my introduction to Bellman’s work, but I can’t wait to dive into his expansive discography!
