We have only ever had good words to spare for Becca James’ music – that tradition will continue today, too. The keen reader might recall reading about her previous EP ‘Trust The Season’, a record we described as “aspirational and celebrative while showcasing the project’s deep eclecticism”. Now, the British songstress returns with her latest effort, a soothing, cathartic ballad going by the name of ‘If you’re not home’.
The track is the perfect evidence of the project’s blueprint; James prides herself on relatable, emotional songs, often drenched in enchanting and spacious classic pop arrangements, massively dreamy and ethereal. ‘If you’re not home’ fits all those boxes, providing a listening experience that’s rewarding and meaningful, while showcasing Becca’s immense songwriting abilities.
Speaking about the record, she explains: “Narratively, before I release my longer project ‘God in Chains’ [her second upcoming EP, ndr] – which is about the depths of healing from trauma societally and personally – ‘If you’re not home’ sets the tone for the unfolding story of healing in my music”.
