We didn’t realize, at first, how good lowcats’ music was. Perhaps the way they present themselves is not that pompous, making you think about the next average American rock duo. Instead, the Charlotte native, lowcats, are nothing like it. Their sound is a kaleidoscopic concoction of indie-pop and electronica, drenched in lo-fi sauce and ethereal moments. Debuting in September, the group has been winning listeners over instantly, providing memorable songwriting and modern productions into a single, mesmerising package.
‘Air’ was their debut: perhaps our favourite tune so far, it channels a pretty minimal arrangement, alternating icy verses to warm, melodic choruses. What wins us over is, in fact, the glorious topline in the hook. Such a great moment, poignant, nostalgic and sad – just as we like it. Chris Suter and Paul Ward are the humans behind the project. Long-time collaborators, the pair bonded over shared musical taste, with a particular focus on bedroom pop and indietronica.
‘Want’ and ‘Space’ have also seen the light of the day, the former being a guitar-based, groovy anthem and the latter a more introspective electronic offering. Safe to say, we love all of them. If you don’t know them yet, it’s time to dig into lowcats’ precious artistic universe: you won’t regret it.
