On the surface, ‘Bakersfield’ might appear as a lone attempt by Barry Muir to make it in the music industry. After a deeper dive into the history behind the Canadian talent, it’s obvious that he doesn’t need to make it… because he already did. An experienced performer and musician, Muir boasts militancy in a series of seminal Canadian rock bands in the 80s and 90s, allowing him to experience first-hand how rewarding it is to connect with a like-minded audience.
It is obvious, at this point, how Barry’s first goal with his solo project is mainly to enjoy pure, unfiltered personal expression, delivered through vintage-flavoured songs balanced between folk, pop and country. Muir’s evocative vocals are an absolute joy to listen to; precise and malleable, they constantly remind us how much of a professional the Canadian singer really is.
Over ten relatable, approachable tunes, ‘Bakersfield’ provides a listening experience that’s rewarding and inspiring. Speaking about the album, Barry Muir states: “It is my most ambitious album. I’ve been writing with Joanne Stacey and Lucy LeBlanc now for years and I feel we’ve come along way in all aspects of songwriting. In the beginning, it wasn’t easy to come up with ten songs to complete an album”.
