Backstrom Concocts Introspective and Stripped-Back New Album ‘Dark Clouds’

My fellow writing partner in crime Gabriel Mazza has been diligently covering the work of Stockholm-based Americana songwriter Backstrom since his debut release ‘The Journey’ about a year ago. He’s a musician we feel deserves a bigger audience and, after just one listen to his brand new album ‘Dark Clouds’, our conviction that he’s a hidden gem is completely reaffirmed.

The record’s title track also serves as its opener – and expertly lays the groundwork for the introspective and stripped-back sonic adventure that awaits. ‘One More Time’ then steps up to the plate with a hauntingly beautiful aura and presence, before the deeply intriguing piano-led piece ‘From The Ashes’ is introduced.

‘Daydreaming’ is a tune we at Mesmerized have waxed lyrical about before, labelling the track “an expansive yet intimate piece that’s meaningful and relatable”, and ‘Like The Night’ is a song that truly showcases the very essence of Backstrom’s artistry.

‘You and Me’ and ‘Tennessee’ complete ‘Dark Clouds’, two tunes I’d implore you to fully explore and examine. With Bart Topher on vocals, Nicky V on guitar, Tim McDonald on piano and organ, Francisco Paz on drums and percussion, and Maciek Szczyciński on bass, Backstrom has assembled a stellar lineup of musicians who bring his visions to life. Simply superb!
