When he wrote ‘Can you feel your heartbeat’, Steve McSmith didn’t know he had written a love song. Drenched in blues and folk influences, he had been always more akin to exploring political or social themes. This time though, his wife made him notice a lighter, more heartfelt note in the song. That ‘heartbeat’ could have easily been mistaken as a relationship and love reference.
What we know for sure, is that ‘Can you feel your heartbeat’ is an absolute gem; an honest and charming folk-rock jewel. About his intentions when writing the song, McSmith explains “describing the feeling I get when I hear a recording of one of my songs. However, when I was playing it to my wife she thought it was more of a love song. Either could fit this song well I think.” You know what they say, accidental love songs are the best ones.
Joined by his backing back, Steve McSmith and the Unknown Band, the British talent infuses his words with intimate, supporting arrangements, often exploring blues steel guitars or acoustic arpeggios. It is timeless music, stuck into a universe that’s floating over our heads, championing the simple things in life.
