Audrey Mac Blends Music and Activism in ‘American Dream’

A lush and evocative alt-country offering, ‘AMERICAN DREAM’ manages to be both traditional and contemporary, blending charming acoustic guitars with modern vocal textures and an overall sense of creeping coolness. It does a good job of hiding its true lyrical ethos behind vibrant and nostalgic sonic matter, making the record quite a layered offering.

You see, ‘AMERICAN DREAM’ find its primary identity in the bright and spacious guitar tones (bordering on shoegaze at times), while delivering a stark and politically-charged lyrical message, hidden behind the ethereal nature of its external livery. Audrey Mac’s powerful and charismatic vocals are a perfect match for such a relevant song. Alex Carr-Engler (one-half of Lonely Richard) does an excellent job on the production.

Hailing from Los Angeles, Mac is highly attentive to her country’s foreign policy and the many problematic issues that go with it. Delving into the inspiration behind ‘AMERICAN DREAM’, she explains: “It is about the cognitive dissonance that most Americans live with regarding the reality of how violent and exploitative our country truly is. Endless wars and increasingly exploitative living conditions are disguised by the lie that is American exceptionalism.”
