The keen reader will already be aware of our appreciation for expansive, spacious and ethereal records. We love hazy, grainy atmospheres with a high amount of poignancy. Athena Lim is the perfect match for that: hailing from London, the talented songstress boasts an incredibly bucolic, soothing and dreamy sonic livery, all drenched in meaningful, otherworldly lyricism. ‘Madrid’ is her latest effort, a stunning slice of indie-folk with a strongly leftfield, texture-packed component.
Originally from Canada, Lim debuted earlier this year with ‘Being Someone’, followed by an EP, ‘Hello Frances’, all showcasing the refined wealth of artistry she has to offer. In particular, her vocals are rather hypnotising: luscious, evocative and anthemic at the same time, they completely steal the listener’s attention, together with the many harmonies Athena is able to craft.
James Atin-Godden is the producer behind the record, Lim’s long-time collaborator. Their musical alchemy seems to working extremely well, and overall the project’s catalogue appears very cohesive and authentic. Speaking about the inspiration behind the single, Athena explains: “I’m not really interested in emulating popular trends in music. I just want to make music that speaks to me and moves me and I love all kinds of music.”
